As I read a textbook for a course, my habit is to write notes to myself in the margin, and to underline passages that I think are particularly relevant. I find that this focuses my attention as I read, and I have also found that these notes make it possible to very quickly get a sense of a chapter's main points when I return to it many months after having first read it. As well, the notes to myself can serve as more than just a summary if I feel particularly inspired, or think of some neat new idea, or find myself being particularly critical, then this should surface in the margin notes. A mouse-click on any of the cover images displayed to the left will take you to the margin notes that I have created for that book.
